Andrea Dezsö is a prolific visual artist whose work spans drawing, book making, cut paper, embroidery, and public art.
Andrea’s work shows a keen understanding of media and visuals, and it is obvious that she appeals to a wide array of of viewers. I am particularly interested in her artist books and embroidery.
Her tunnel books were on display at the Slash:Paper Under the Knife exhibition and one of my favorite pieces. If you aren’t familiar with the format of a tunnel book, it’s a book comprised of images that you look through to 3D landscapes. Andrea created multiple tunnel books that illustrate Transylvania folklore and myth. The tunnel book format was very appropriate; the folklore are stories, and it’s logical that they would be presented in the form of a book. There is also depth and hierarchy in a tunnel book, and at times can make for an quasi-eerie lighting and really set the mood for the drawings and their content.
Andrea’s embroidery project is humorous; she took sayings from her mother and embroidered them. Some of the sayings are inappropriate, some funny, some just ill-advised. The presentation is of these pieces reminiscent of an old dish towel, like something that would be passed down from daughter to mother.
I can really appreciate that Andrea has such a wonderful knowledge of materials. It really allows her to make things that are highly appropriate for their subject matter.
