I absolutely adore Amy Kligman’s work. Living and working in Kansas City, Missouri (my hometown!), she paints using interesting patterns and a keen sense of unusual storytelling.

A lot of Amy’s work is adorned with pattern or some sort of repetition. I think it’s an interesting idea that Amy paints everything — pattern implies exact replication of an image, sort of like a stamp. With her work though, this is not the case. Each flower is not exactly the same, each brush stroke makes part of the pattern slightly different — I really enjoy that. It seems laborious and shows how much care goes into her work.

When viewing the content of her work, I can’t help but be reminded of fables. All of the girls featured in Amy’s paintings are static. The narrative is not one of conflict or action — it’s as if we, as the viewer, are just there for the end of the story. Her paintings speak as cautionary tales and show the consequences of actions.
