ginette lapalme

When looking at Ginette Lapalme’s work, it’s important to look at not only her website, but her blog, Flickr, and artist collective she’s apart of, Wowee Zonk. They all provide the fodder from which her work is derived.

Ginette is an artist living and working out of Toronto, Canada, and her art revolves around a myriad of different media, including video, silk-screen, figurines, and jewelry, in addition to illustration. It all looks like it’s by Ginette, and her sensibilities stay the same no matter what she’s creating.

I really enjoy where Ginette comes from with her work. She’s heavily inspired by cartoons and comics, and replicates this sort of style in her work. She’s created animated gifs of cartoons (like the Muppet Babies!), she has this way of extracting the tiniest details that make them seem somewhat gratuitous and add a hint of darkness to something whose original intent was something innocent. I like how it’s appropriated. This aspect comes through on her printed work — it’s the smiling characters that are sometimes being subversive.
