To round out the post day, I’ve decided to write about another cut paper artist. Mr. Yen (real name Jonathan Chapman) is a graphic design student out of the UK and already making a name for himself (aside from calling himself Mr. Yen)!

Mr. Yen’s aesthetic is clean, crisp, and and generally monochromatic. It is evident that he’s a graphic designer at heart, as his hand cut type is impeccable. He has an active Etsy store that sells cards, wall hangings, and other original cut outs. I especially love his Spirograph cards!

Rachel Wilson studied English in college. After having worked in the publishing industry for awhile, she eventually returned to her love of making things. I think that Rachel’s time spent studying literature shines through in her work.

Upon viewing her work, I was instantly reminded of the Art Nouveau movement. Her drawings, like that the art movement preceding them, uses a hierarchy in design and shapes. Emphasizing line weight and scale, she has her subject contain different patterns with accent color. This results in some lovely, multifaceted drawings — the viewer can enjoy both individual patterns and how they all work together.

Her work is controlled, organized, and mixes clarity with ambiguity. It is like a well-crafted story; its voice original, ideas unique yet not lost on its reader.

Tom Edwards is an illustrator/graphic designer living in Brighton. While his portfolio is all-around impressive, his drawings/collages are what I have really spent some time with.

Tom’s drawing style is somewhat naive, but that is not meant to be an insult. His work is charming, engaging, and very interesting in its simplicity. I have included images of sketches and simpler drawings, but he also has collages that combine both his drawing sensibilities with color and shape design. Photographic images that are used in his collage are nicely paired with his sanguine hand.

There are a number of different projects featured on Tom’s website, but one I particularly enjoy is If Drawings Were Photographs. It is a collaboration between himself and Rob Matthews — Photographs are styled around Tom’s original drawings. Usually, it’s the other way around, and a very welcome change.

DJG Design (aka Danny Gibson) is an artist/designer I’ve been admiring since I was in high school. He was the artist doing the show posters and local album covers in my hometown and has since expanded his popularity to more than just the mid-west United States.

DJG’s media of choice really varies. He uses collage, drawing, painting, and also plays around with typography to create his images. There is a lot of considered hap-haphazardness in his work; some pieces look chaotic, but they are always eye-catching and make sense. He holds back at the appropriate time to make sure a message is communicated.

DJG’s work is full of non-sequiturs and the pairing of images that don’t necessarily go together. It is very reminiscent of a lot of local show-poster cultures I’ve seen, but I think that his work is smart enough to go beyond just that, to something that’s a work of art.

Nepomuk is a small design and illustration group from Berlin, Germany. With three members, they do a variety of design and illustrative projects, including books, posters, and even coloring books!

Nepomuk has some great variety in their work. They do a lot of pieces dealing with typography and book design, but also drawing a printmaking, involving less calculation. Nepomuk has such a nice, strong variety of work in their portfolio. Each piece stands by itself well but also feels cohesive in an effort by the three members.

It’s hard to pinpoint exactly what my favorite part of their work is — I think it’s some of their poster pieces that are heavily geometric and remind me of cross-stitch sewing (pieces were designed for a show titled, Astronomia Nova).

thereza rowe

Thereza Rowe is a London-based illustrator and graphic designer. She enjoys drawing a variety of different animals and often employs them in her work.

Also prevalent in her work is a sense of whimsy (in the best sense of the word) and imaginary lands. I love her sense of color and the characterization she’s given to her worlds. They are interesting, not only in the proportion of the objects in her drawings, but also due to the materials she chooses to work with. There is a nice push and pull of collage and plain ole’ drawing’.
