Mar Cerdà’s Watercolor Dioramas Resemble Film Stills

Barcelona-based illus­tra­tor Mar Cerdà cre­ates small, charm­ing dio­ra­mas out of cut paper. Her prac­tice revolves around water­col­or paint, and she uses its stur­dy paper to form her sculp­tures. After­wards, she pho­tographs her hand­i­work. When viewed just right, the scenes are rem­i­nis­cent of film stills.

There’s a good rea­son that these dio­ra­mas remind me of movies—Mar’s train­ing is in cin­e­ma with a spe­cial­iza­tion in art direc­tion. This back­ground encour­aged a fas­ci­na­tion with the treat­ment of space. “I firm­ly believe that a char­ac­ter can be defined by a space,” she writes, “even if is not present at all.” I agree!
